In Maharashtra, the demand for artificial intelligence (AI) education has led to a remarkable 93.05% increase in engineering seats for AI-related courses, rising from 14,050 in AY 2023-24 to 27,124 in AY 2025-26, according to data from the Common Entrance Test (CET) Cell. This increase reflects the growing relevance of AI in the technical field and is driven by better job placement opportunities and a rising student interest in flexible work arrangements. Courses such as Artificial Intelligence and Data Science and Computer Science and Engineering (Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning) reported filling rates between 83% and 94%. In contrast, traditional engineering disciplines like Electronics, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering have seen stagnant or declining enrollment figures, with Chemical Engineering experiencing a 5.35% drop in seats. Professor Sanjay Gandhe from the Pune Institute of Computer Technology noted that while AI courses are gaining popularity due to their job prospects, traditional courses remain crucial for the manufacturing sector. The CET for AY 2026-27 admissions is currently underway, with final intake numbers pending approval from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).
