Shares of Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) surged nearly 13% on Wednesday after the company reported stronger-than-expected quarterly results and an optimistic revenue forecast. AMD projected second-quarter revenue of $11.2 billion (plus or minus $300 million), significantly above Wall Street's estimate of $10.52 billion. The company also reported adjusted earnings of $1.37 per share on revenue of $10.25 billion for the March quarter. A major driver of this growth was the 57% year-on-year increase in data center revenue, which reached $5.8 billion as cloud computing companies ramped up investments in AI infrastructure. AMD's positioning in both graphics processing units (GPUs) and central processing units (CPUs) is allowing it to capitalize on the growing demand for AI hardware. Earlier this year, AMD secured a landmark deal with Meta Platforms worth up to $60 billion over five years, further solidifying its role in the AI market. In contrast, Nvidia's stock has only increased by about 6% this year, while the broader Philadelphia Semiconductor Index has risen around 48%. However, competition is heating up, particularly as Intel issued a strong revenue forecast and is ramping up in-house manufacturing to meet rising CPU demand.
