Hillgrove Farm, located near Dunedin in Otago, New Zealand, has successfully restocked its poultry sheds with 200,000 chickens after a significant bird flu outbreak that occurred in December 2024. The outbreak, caused by the H7N6 strain, led to the culling of the entire flock. Repopulation efforts began in April 2024, culminating in the introduction of the final flock this past month. Chief Executive John McKay highlighted the milestone, noting that the farm is now producing around 150,000 eggs daily. He emphasized the importance of rigorous biosecurity measures and ongoing learning from global practices to ensure resilience in the poultry sector. The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) is transitioning the response to a close-out phase, having achieved eradication of the virus. An agreement was also established to form the Poultry Council, aimed at improving biosecurity and establishing standards for poultry farms. Additionally, Mainland Poultry has confirmed new ownership involving Pacific Equity Partners Gateway and current shareholders, pending regulatory approval.
