A recent report from Policy Exchange highlights a troubling trend in the NHS, revealing that sick leave costs taxpayers approximately £4.6 billion annually. This figure represents the equivalent of 80,000 staff members, enough to fully staff 80 hospitals. The report indicates that NHS absence levels are significantly higher than those in the private sector, with a rate of 5.15% compared to 1.8%. Over 8 million days of clinician time are lost each year, leading to 120 million missed patient contacts. The report attributes this epidemic to the NHS's generous sick leave policies, which allow staff to take up to six months off at full pay. Additionally, long-term sickness absence has risen by 43% since 2019, with a notable increase in the number of staff not returning to work.
