The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party, led by Vijay, made a historic breakthrough in the Tamil Nadu elections by winning 107 seats, thus ending the 40-year dominance of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the AIADMK. This election marked a generational shift, as TVK's campaign effectively targeted voters who felt neglected by traditional parties. Vijay differentiated TVK from its opponents by labeling the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as an ideological rival and the DMK as a corrupt political entity.

The party's candidate selection was strategic, with about 60% of nominees being first-time candidates, primarily aged between 38 and 47. This fresh slate, combined with a manifesto promising specific benefits for women and youth, resonated with voters. Women were promised ₹2,500 monthly, six free LPG cylinders, and a sovereign coin, while youth were offered unemployment allowances and paid internships.

The campaign's branding, including a distinctive flag and election symbol, further enhanced visibility. TVK's grassroots network, built through the Vijay Makkal Iyakkam (VKI) fan club, played a crucial role in mobilizing support. The results showcased a significant shift in Tamil Nadu's political landscape, with TVK emerging as a credible alternative to the established Dravidian parties.
