In response to complaints regarding hidden fees during college admissions, the Maharashtra government has mandated that all higher educational institutions display their complete fee structures on large hoardings outside their main gates. This requirement, as stated by Chandrakant Patil, the state's higher and technical education minister, aims to enhance transparency and prevent colleges from imposing additional charges beyond the approved fee. All compulsory fees, including development, laboratory, library, and gymkhana fees, must be included in this display. The government has categorized these charges under a single fee category as per the Fee Regulatory Authority Act. Additionally, a 100% fee waiver has been introduced for female students from families with an annual income below ₹8 lakh (approximately $9,600 USD). Furthermore, the Panjabrao Deshmukh scholarship scheme for female students has been expanded to cover 814 courses across the state, providing additional support for those unable to stay in hostels with a monthly allowance of ₹6,000 (approximately $72 USD). Optional services such as hostel accommodation and transport will still incur separate charges.
