Meta has embarked on an innovative approach by constructing six tent-like data centers, officially termed 'rapid deployment structures,' in New Albany, Ohio. This initiative aims to significantly reduce the time required for building data centers, with the goal of cutting completion time in half. According to Michael Thomas, founder of Cleanview, the tents measure 125,000 square feet each and were erected between April and June 2026. This strategy echoes tactics used by Tesla during the rollout of the Model 3 and is designed to house valuable AI chips essential for Meta's operations. The company has committed to spending up to $145 billion on data centers and related infrastructure, although this ambitious plan has contributed to a 5% drop in Meta's stock this year. The construction of these tents comes at a time when Meta has faced challenges in releasing its AI models, with delays reported in providing developers access to the necessary APIs. As Meta continues to innovate in data center deployment, the effectiveness of this tent-based strategy remains to be seen.
