The renovation of Shastri Market, one of Chandigarh's oldest marketplaces, was officially launched on Saturday through a bhoomi pujan ceremony led by Satya Pal Jain, the additional solicitor general. The project, estimated to cost between ₹6 crore and ₹8 crore, is set to be completed by the end of 2026 and aims to modernize the market into a well-equipped commercial hub. Former mayor Davesh Moudgil emphasized that the initiative will strengthen urban infrastructure and improve civic amenities, with costs fully covered by the shopkeepers. Key enhancements will include raising shop floor levels, increasing ceiling heights, and transitioning to solar energy. Additionally, the market will feature 100–150 CCTV cameras, improved water storage systems, Wi-Fi facilities, and better-organized parking to enhance visitor security and convenience. The success of this project may lead to similar redevelopment efforts in other markets across the city.
