The Bombay High Court in Mumbai has ordered the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take over the investigation into the death of a woman allegedly caused by dowry harassment. This decision follows a plea from the victim's father, who expressed concerns about the 'lackadaisical' approach of the Kashimira police in Thane district. The court highlighted significant discrepancies in the police probe, including the failure to adequately address the charges against the accused. The victim, who married in November 2021, faced ongoing harassment and abuse, leading to a miscarriage and ultimately her tragic death by suicide in February 2023. Despite the father's insistence on the need for a murder charge, the police reportedly registered a first information report reluctantly and did not pursue the husband, who absconded. The court also noted that the medical officer's postmortem report could not definitively determine the cause of death, emphasizing the need for a forensic examination that was not conducted. The court has mandated that all relevant documents be transferred to the CBI for an efficient investigation.
