In response to safety incidents on trekking routes, the Karnataka government has enacted a comprehensive Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) that mandates certified nature guides for all forest treks. Forest Minister Eshwar B Khandre emphasized that this initiative aims to enhance the safety of trekkers, improve monitoring, and facilitate quicker emergency responses. The new regulations prohibit solo trekking, requiring a guide for every group of up to ten trekkers, and limit the number of trekkers to 150 per trail per day. Online registration is now compulsory, and trekkers must use a mobile tracking application for real-time monitoring by forest officials. Guides will be equipped with GPS-enabled communication devices and are responsible for keeping their group together, conducting mandatory headcounts at checkpoints, and coordinating with rescue teams in emergencies. The SOP also includes clear marking of trekking routes, restrictions on hazardous areas, and guidelines for waste disposal. Additional measures include requiring parental consent for minors and fitness certificates for senior citizens, with group insurance for trekkers under consideration.
