Tesla has received authorization for 42 autonomous vehicles in Texas, significantly smaller than Waymo's fleet of 577 robotaxis. Recent filings from the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles reveal that while Waymo's vehicles are classified as level 4 autonomous, Tesla's cars mainly utilize level 2 driver assistance systems. The new Texas law requires operators to self-certify their vehicles as level 4, which has raised questions about Tesla's certification process. Despite launching its Robotaxi service in Texas in June 2025, Tesla has not disclosed how it meets the new standards. The company is under pressure to advance its autonomous technology as competition intensifies in the electric vehicle market. In addition to Waymo, Tesla also trails smaller competitors like AV Ride, which has 317 authorized vehicles. Tesla's Austin fleet has experienced 17 reported incidents between July 2025 and April 2026, with two resulting in minor injuries, highlighting safety concerns during testing with human supervisors present.
