The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has reported a significant decline in the number of Class 12 students scoring 90% and above, dropping to 94,028 this year from 1.12 lakh last year, marking a 16% decrease. The overall pass percentage also fell by approximately three points. This decline follows a trend observed since the pandemic, where the number of high scorers surged due to assessments conducted by schools rather than traditional exams. The peak was in 2021 with 70,004 students scoring above 95%. The introduction of an on-screen marking system this year is believed to have contributed to the more stringent evaluation process, focusing on awarding marks for problem-solving steps rather than just final answers. This year, the number of students scoring 95% and above also saw a sharp decline, falling by 31% from 24,867 last year to 17,113. This figure is slightly below the 2019 number of 17,693.
