India is ambitiously targeting $1 trillion in exports for the current fiscal year, following a record $863 billion in 2025-26, as stated by Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal. He noted that the network of free trade agreements (FTAs) now covers more than two-thirds of global trade, with nine FTAs signed in the past three-and-a-half years, enhancing trade relations with 38 economies. Five additional agreements are expected to become operational within the next year. Goyal emphasized that India is negotiating further agreements with countries like Chile and the Maldives, aiming to finalize these by year-end. Amid global disruptions, including high tariffs and geopolitical tensions, Goyal sees opportunities for India to enhance export competitiveness through a logistics overhaul led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The government is implementing reforms such as the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and reducing compliance burdens to create a more conducive business environment. The recent Logistics Ease Across Different States (LEADS) 2025 report highlighted Tamil Nadu as the top coastal state, while Uttar Pradesh and Mizoram topped landlocked and northeastern categories, respectively.
