In response to a safety incident involving the New Delhi-Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra Special train, the Ministry of Railways has mandated a nationwide inspection of all Integral Coach Factory (ICF) coaches. The directive follows the discovery of a crack in a sleeper coach on June 6 at Ludhiana Railway Station, which caused the train to split into two sections, alarming passengers and railway personnel. The inspection will focus on identifying rust, corrosion, and structural weaknesses, with completion expected within a week. Any coach deemed excessively corroded or structurally compromised will be removed from service. Advanced tools, including endoscopy cameras and ultrasonic thickness gauges, will be utilized for thorough evaluations. Additionally, the Ministry is simplifying Standard Operating Protocols (SOPs) to expedite the condemnation of severely damaged coaches. This initiative comes amid growing concerns over rail safety, highlighted by recent incidents, including the derailment of the Ujjain Express in Uttarakhand and a fire in the Rajdhani Express in Madhya Pradesh, though no injuries were reported in these cases.
