The historic narrow-gauge railway line connecting Pathankot in Punjab with Jogindernagar in Himachal Pradesh resumed operations on Tuesday after a nearly four-year suspension due to severe damage from flooding in 2022. The reopening was celebrated by local residents, with around 60 passengers traveling on the first day. Train fares are significantly lower than bus fares, costing only about ₹40 compared to ₹392 for a bus ride, making it a more economical option for commuters. The service was inaugurated by Hamirpur MP Anurag Thakur and Rajya Sabha MP Rajiv Bhardwaj, who flagged off two seven-coach trains from Pathankot. Thakur acknowledged that the restoration took longer than anticipated but highlighted the importance of the railway as a lifeline for the region. The Ministry of Railways invested approximately ₹70 crore to construct a new bridge and restore the line, which is expected to enhance connectivity and benefit thousands of passengers in the area.
