New Zealand is increasingly facing landslides as a consequence of climate change, with an estimated NZ$250–300 million in damages each year. The country’s steep terrain and weak sedimentary rocks, combined with deforestation and extreme rainfall, have heightened this risk. Recent advancements in machine learning and satellite technology are enabling scientists to better predict where landslides are likely to occur. By analyzing past landslide occurrences and environmental conditions, researchers can create models to generate on-demand landslide hazard maps. Preliminary findings indicate that under higher-emission scenarios, areas susceptible to rainfall-triggered landslides will expand. Although established forests can help buffer against landslides, even these areas are becoming more vulnerable due to climate change. Therefore, strategic land-use decisions are critical to mitigate risks and protect communities from future storms. Identifying high-risk areas today can lead to better infrastructure planning and potentially save lives in the future.
