In FY26, health insurance solidified its dominance in India's non-life insurance sector, achieving a market share of 40.8%, up from 38.6% in FY25, according to a report by The Times of India. Premium collections in the health segment rose by 15.4% to approximately ₹1.4 lakh crore (around $168 billion USD), surpassing the overall non-life industry growth of 9.3%. The total gross direct premium income for the non-life insurance industry reached nearly ₹3.4 lakh crore. Standalone health insurers contributed 32.7% of the total health insurance premium, underwriting ₹44,863.7 crore of the total health premium of ₹1,37,144.5 crore. New India Assurance led the health segment with premiums of ₹21,531.5 crore, capturing a 15.7% market share, followed by Star Health & Allied Insurance at ₹18,435 crore (13.4%). Other segments displayed mixed trends, with motor insurance maintaining a 32.2% share and premiums of about ₹1.1 lakh crore. Personal accident insurance saw the highest growth at 35%, while the miscellaneous segment experienced a sharp decline of 17.6%.
