The Punjab and Haryana High Court has dismissed a petition from the Miri Piri Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Charitable Trust, located in Shahbad, Haryana, challenging the authority of the Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (HSGMC) to manage its medical board. The Trust contended that it is an independent charitable entity established by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and that its assets do not qualify as 'gurdwara property,' thus placing it outside HSGMC's jurisdiction. However, the HSGMC argued that the Haryana Sikh Gurdwaras (Management) Act, 2014, grants it the authority to oversee institutions previously managed by the SGPC. The court, led by Justice Jagmohan Bansal, found that the Trust was created by the SGPC to comply with legal requirements and that all trustees were appointed by the SGPC. The court noted that the Trust’s head office operates from the SGPC office in Amritsar and that the SGPC president serves as the ex officio chairman of the Trust. The ruling emphasized that the Trust's properties would revert to Sri Harmandir Sahib, Amritsar, if it ceased operations, affirming that the Trust's assets are effectively SGPC property. The Miri Piri Trust has been running a 500-bed medical college and hospital since March 2006.
