Waymo is recalling 3,791 of its autonomous vehicles due to a defect that poses a significant safety risk, as reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The recall was initiated following an incident on April 20, where a driverless vehicle did not come to a complete stop when encountering flooded road conditions on a high-speed roadway. The NHTSA noted that entering a flooded roadway can lead to loss of vehicle control, increasing the likelihood of crashes or injuries. The affected vehicles are equipped with Waymo's 5th and 6th generation Automated Driving Systems (ADS), which regulators estimate have a 100% defect rate. The recall includes vehicles manufactured between March 17, 2022, and April 20, 2026. Waymo has already implemented an interim software update to mitigate risks and has taken additional measures to enhance weather-related controls and mapping systems. As Waymo owns the entire fleet, it was able to apply these updates without the need for traditional consumer notifications.
