Waymo has announced a recall of 3,791 robotaxis following an incident where one of its vehicles drove into a flooded road in San Antonio, Texas. The voluntary recall was filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) after the unoccupied robotaxi was swept away by the flood. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported. The incident raised concerns about the vehicle's navigation system, which failed to reroute around the flooded area. In response, Waymo is issuing an over-the-air (OTA) software update to fix the algorithm issue, which will not require the vehicles to visit a service center. Until the software patch is finalized, Waymo has implemented interim measures, including limiting access to areas prone to flash flooding. This is the second flood-related incident affecting Waymo's robotaxis in San Antonio in the past month, prompting the company to temporarily halt operations in the city, though they plan to resume later this week. The recall follows previous issues where Waymo vehicles were found to illegally pass stopped school buses, indicating ongoing challenges in the deployment of self-driving technology.
