While acknowledging Iyer's leadership skills and recent successes with the Punjab Kings, Manjrekar highlighted Gill's superior performance in the IPL, where he outscored Iyer and led the Gujarat Titans to two playoff finishes, including a final appearance. Manjrekar pointed out that captaincy should focus on players who are likely to be central to the team's future plans. He noted that while Iyer's appointment was justified, the selectors may have chosen him due to team composition issues, as Gill's role as an opener complicated his selection. Manjrekar believes Gill's time as a captain will come soon, especially with future challenges such as the T20 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand on the horizon.
