The ambitious project known as the 'Freedom Ship' aims to create the world’s first floating city, designed to house up to 80,000 people, including 50,000 permanent residents. This £12 billion vessel will feature schools, a research hospital, and various entertainment facilities such as a 15,000-seat sports stadium, a water park, and museums. The ship, measuring 800 feet wide and comprising 30 decks, is too large to dock at ports and will remain in international waters, powered by nuclear energy. It will facilitate travel via ferries and a tram system for visitors. The concept, originally proposed by American engineer Norman Nixon in the 1990s, has resurfaced with renewed interest following Nixon's death in 2012. Roger Gooch, CEO of Freedom Cruise Line International, emphasized the high demand, stating they could justify building multiple ships. Construction in Indonesia will begin with the hull, and residents may start moving aboard during the three to four-year construction period.
