The Directorate General of GST Intelligence (DGGI) has revealed a significant input tax credit (ITC) fraud amounting to ₹1,825 crore (approximately $220 million USD), leading to the arrest of a suspect at New Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport on Sunday. The suspect, who was returning from Dubai, had evaded multiple summons related to various economic offenses. Investigations indicated a 'well-structured arrangement' where fake invoices were used to claim ITC, which was then encashed through refund claims on zero-rated exports. The arrested individual was found to control a network of dummy firms, utilizing borrowed 'know your customer' (KYC) documents to create entities that lacked genuine business operations. These firms generated fake purchase invoices for high-value tobacco products, which were actually procured locally at low prices without invoices. This fraudulent activity enabled the masterminds to introduce ineligible ITC into the GST system and accumulate it in selected entities presented as exporters.
