Punjab has been recognized as a top-performing state in school education, surpassing Kerala in key foundational learning indicators, as per the NITI Aayog Education Quality Report 2026. Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains announced that Punjab recorded 82% proficiency in language and 78% in mathematics among Class 3 students, outpacing Kerala’s 75% and 70%, respectively. In Class 9 mathematics, Punjab achieved 52%, compared to Kerala's 45%. Bains credited this transformation to systemic reforms, improved infrastructure, and the collective efforts of teachers, students, and parents. The state has successfully implemented initiatives like Mission Samarth and the Schools of Eminence programme, leading to significant improvements in learning outcomes. Notably, 99.9% of government schools in Punjab now have electricity, and 99% are equipped with functional computers. The student-teacher ratio has improved to 22:1, and dropout rates have decreased, with over 90% of Class 10 students transitioning to Class 11. The report highlights Punjab’s efforts to bridge the urban-rural divide in education, ensuring equal opportunities for all students, particularly girls. Furthermore, 786 students from government schools have qualified for the JEE Main, and 1,284 for NEET, showcasing improved performance in competitive exams. The minister emphasized that the NITI Aayog report validates the visible transformation in Punjab's education system.
