Kinew mentioned that the government may consider reversing its stance if the United States agrees to lift tariffs on Canadian goods. In 2024, the NDP government had launched rebates of up to $4,000 for electric vehicle purchases. However, last year, the government ceased providing these rebates specifically for Tesla vehicles and those manufactured in China as a response to ongoing tariffs. Tesla's letter to the government argues that the decision to end the rebates was procedurally unfair and made for an improper purpose.
