On Wednesday, a 400-tonne crane tilted while lifting a 140-tonne girder at a metro construction site in the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), Mumbai, due to a mechanical failure. Fortunately, there were no injuries, but the incident led to the closure of a 600-metre stretch of road for over 12 hours, causing significant traffic congestion in the area, which sees a daily footfall of around 250,000 office-goers and 300,000 visitors. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) fined contractor J Kumar Infraprojects Limited ₹1 crore for the incident. The crane failure occurred early in the morning, around 4:30 am, near the Asian Heart Institute junction while launching a girder for the under-construction Metro 2B line. Authorities managed to stabilize and remove the crane by 9:15 pm, nearly 17 hours later, but the road remained closed during the operation. This incident has reignited concerns over construction safety standards, especially following a recent slab collapse in Mulund that resulted in fatalities.
