In a bid to enhance air quality monitoring, Delhi will set up 13 new Continuous Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Stations (CAAQMS) this year, increasing the total to 60. Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa announced that 10 of these stations are expected to be operational by November 2023. Currently, Delhi has the highest number of air quality monitoring stations among all Indian cities, with 47 existing stations. The new stations will help create a 5x5 km grid, ensuring that there is a monitoring station every 25 square kilometers, which aims to complete the network by the end of 2026-27. Environmental experts, while welcoming this expansion, stress the importance of effective data utilization for better policymaking and the need for independent assessments to ensure data quality.
