Arvind Kejriwal, the national convenor of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), announced that Punjab is the first state in India to take decisive action against excessive fee hikes by private schools. The AAP-led government has mandated that schools refund any excess fees charged to students. Under the proposed legislation, private schools will be restricted from increasing fees by more than 5% annually, covering all types of charges such as tuition and development fees. Furthermore, schools that raised fees by over 15% in the past three years must refund the surplus. Kejriwal emphasized the significance of this initiative, stating it aims to relieve parents from financial burdens and ensure accountability in the education sector. He also called for similar regulations to be adopted nationwide, advocating for a cap on private school fee increases across India. The Punjab government is concurrently working to enhance the quality of education in public schools, having recently achieved the top position in school education rankings, surpassing Kerala.
