In a notable political development in Tamil Nadu, over two-thirds of AIADMK MLAs convened at the office of Rajya Sabha leader CV Shanmugam in Chennai to pledge their support for actor Thalapathy Vijay, highlighting a growing rift within the party. Approximately 35 MLAs attended the meeting, representing two-thirds of the AIADMK's strength in the new assembly. The MLAs have called on AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami to explore a potential alliance with the Tamil Nadu Vanniyar Katchi (TVK), which fell short of a majority by 10 seats. In the recent elections, the TVK emerged as a significant player, securing 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly, while the AIADMK managed only 47 seats. The ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) faced a major setback, winning just 59 seats. Palaniswami acknowledged the election results, expressing gratitude to the electorate and stating that the party would work to recover from this setback.
