Lagos State University (LASU) has been awarded ₦3 billion (approximately $7.3 million USD) to establish a Centre of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, and Cyber Sciences, making it the only beneficiary from the Southwest region of Nigeria. This funding comes from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) as part of its 2026 Special Intervention Projects. The announcement highlighted that LASU was chosen following a rigorous national evaluation process, which assessed its institutional capacity, infrastructure, and track record in digital technologies. The new centre aims to advance research and training in fields such as artificial intelligence, robotics, cybersecurity, and coding, ultimately preparing students for the global digital economy. Vice-Chancellor Professor Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello expressed gratitude for the investment and emphasized the university's commitment to delivering value to both students and the broader Nigerian society. This initiative is part of TETFund's efforts to enhance Nigeria's technological capabilities and address the digital skills gap.
