France is advocating for a more detailed and enforceable framework in the ongoing negotiations for the India-European Union (EU) Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Nicolas Forissier, the Minister Delegate for Foreign Trade and Economic Attractiveness, highlighted the importance of moving beyond political alignment to address non-tariff barriers that obstruct market access. The FTA, concluded on January 27, 2026, aims to provide duty-free access for over 99% of Indian exports, including textiles and footwear, while offering the EU preferential duties for cars and wines. Forissier emphasized the urgency of implementing the agreement effectively to achieve a mutually beneficial outcome. He also called for enhanced international cooperation in regulating e-commerce, citing the need for safeguards to protect consumers and combat illegal trade. With digital commerce becoming a significant aspect of the global economy, Forissier noted that regulations must evolve to keep pace with its growth. Additionally, he reiterated the importance of the multilateral trading system and the World Trade Organisation in fostering open and predictable commerce.
