Between 2014 and 2025, India released 2,996 climate-resilient crop varieties under the National Agricultural Research System, spearheaded by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). This initiative is part of the National Mission for Sustainable Agriculture (NMSA), which aims to enhance agricultural sustainability and address climate-related challenges. The ICAR launched the National Innovations on Climate Resilient Agriculture (NICRA) program in 2011, focusing on developing and disseminating agricultural technologies that can withstand extreme weather events such as droughts, floods, and heat waves. Vulnerability assessments conducted in 651 agricultural districts revealed that 310 districts are highly or very highly vulnerable to climate change. To further support adaptation efforts, Climate Resilient Villages have been established in 448 villages across 151 districts in 28 states and Union Territories, demonstrating appropriate technologies for wider adoption. The NMSA promotes practices aimed at improving water-use efficiency, soil health management, and sustainable agricultural systems.
