A recent study published in JAMA Network Open by researchers from Tufts University indicates that high-dose vitamin D supplements may significantly lower the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 19% for adults with specific variations in the vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene. This research is particularly relevant in India, where 15.3% of the population, or nearly 136 million individuals, are affected by prediabetes. The study reanalyzed data from the D2d trial, which involved 2,098 participants who received either 4,000 IU of vitamin D daily or a placebo over 2.5 years. While the original trial did not show a significant reduction in diabetes risk overall, the new findings suggest that those with AC or CC variants of the VDR gene are more likely to benefit from supplementation. The study's senior author, Anastassios Pittas, emphasized the potential for personalized medicine in diabetes prevention, noting that vitamin D is inexpensive and widely available. However, the authors caution against self-dosing high vitamin D without medical advice, as excessive intake can lead to toxicity. Lifestyle changes, including a balanced diet and regular physical activity, remain crucial for managing prediabetes.
