Researchers from Imperial College London have introduced a promising blood test called 'VeloCD', which can predict the trajectory of illnesses and responses to treatments. This method analyzes gene expression levels in the blood to determine whether patients, particularly children with acute fever, are likely to recover or deteriorate. Published in the journal Nature Communications, the study highlights how the test can also indicate whether healthy adults exposed to viruses like flu or COVID-19 will develop symptoms. Senior author Aubrey Cunnington, head of the infectious disease department, emphasized the test's potential to improve patient care by enabling faster triage and timely treatment. The 'VeloCD' method employs RNA markers to assess the activation of genes in response to illness, allowing for predictions about a patient's future clinical state without needing repeated measurements. This innovative approach could transform how healthcare providers manage and treat infectious diseases.
