The Congress party has strongly criticized the Indian government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, labeling it as anti-worker. On International Labour Day, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge demanded a review of the new Labour Code, which he claims promotes precarious employment practices like contract labor and 'Hire & Fire' policies. Kharge pointed out that 69% of the workforce currently earns below the statutory minimum wage, and he attributed the rising unemployment, particularly among educated graduates, to the government's policies. He emphasized the need for a national minimum wage of ₹400 (roughly $4.80) per day and called for the revival of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), which he claims has been undermined by the government. Kharge also highlighted that wages have stagnated, with real wage growth of less than 1% annually over the past decade. He urged the government to prioritize the prevention of contractual employment and to provide universal health coverage for workers, along with life and accident insurance for unorganized workers.
