The Bombay High Court has cleared the way for Sangram Patil, a 49-year-old UK citizen and consultant doctor with the National Health Service (NHS), to return to England after nearly four months of detention. Patil was detained upon his arrival at Mumbai airport on January 10 for allegedly posting objectionable content against a leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). On April 15, the Advocate General of Maharashtra stated that the government had no objections to lifting the Look Out Circular (LOC) against him if investigation reports were not available within three weeks. Justice Ashwin D Bhobe emphasized the need for timely investigations, stating that a person cannot be held indefinitely. Patil's lawyers argued that his detention could jeopardize his job and family responsibilities in the UK. The court accepted Patil's undertaking to cooperate with the investigation and ordered modifications to the LOC, allowing him to travel outside India by or after May 11. The court is expected to hear his main plea in June 2026.
