The pink toilets in Lucknow, intended to provide safe sanitation for women, are largely inaccessible due to poor maintenance and technical issues. A recent survey by Hindustan Times revealed that many of these facilities, located in areas like Vrindavan Yojana, Qaiserbagh, Ashiana, and Gomti Nagar, were locked even during the day. Municipal commissioner Gaurav Kumar acknowledged the problems and stated that repair work is in progress at approximately 70 locations, with hopes for restoration by June. Despite previous attempts to privatize operations, the plan failed, leading to direct intervention by the Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC). Corporators have raised concerns about the unequal distribution of toilets, with some wards lacking any facilities. Residents expressed frustration over the closures, citing specific instances where toilets have remained shut for over a year. The situation highlights the urgent need for the LMC to prioritize women's access to public sanitation.
