In a shocking incident in Bhandup, Mumbai, a 61-year-old retired employee of the Maharashtra State Co-operative Bank was defrauded of ₹40 lakh by cyber criminals impersonating officials from the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and the National Investigation Agency (NIA). The scheme began on March 10, when the victim received a video call from someone claiming to be an ATS and NIA officer, alleging that his bank accounts were linked to a money laundering operation related to a Delhi blast case. The fraudsters claimed that the Supreme Court had ordered the attachment of his property and threatened arrest. Under pressure, the victim transferred ₹28 lakh on March 13 and later secured a loan of ₹10 lakh from his wife to pay the scammers an additional amount as a supposed security deposit. After the promised refund did not arrive, he realized he had been scammed and reported the incident to the police. Authorities have registered a case against unknown persons under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, including extortion and cheating.
