The Supreme Court of India has intervened in the case of a four-year-old girl who was allegedly raped and murdered in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. Following complaints from the victim's parents about the initial police investigation, the court ordered the formation of a special investigation team (SIT) to ensure a thorough inquiry. The bench, led by Chief Justice Surya Kant, instructed that the SIT be composed of women police officers and headed by an officer of the rank of commissioner or inspector general. The SIT is tasked with addressing the grievances of the victim's family and examining the actions of two private hospitals that reportedly refused to treat the injured child. The court has mandated that the SIT submit its supplementary report to the trial court within two weeks, during which time the ongoing court proceedings will be paused. This decision comes after the Supreme Court previously criticized the Ghaziabad police for their handling of the case, highlighting their reluctance to file an FIR and their insensitivity during the investigation.
