On May 9, the prices of domestic and commercial LPG cylinders in India remained stable, despite previous increases driven by global supply disruptions. The Indian government is actively managing fuel costs to protect consumers, having absorbed significant price hikes since March. In the latest adjustments, commercial LPG prices have increased by ₹993, following earlier hikes of ₹144 in March and ₹203 in April. The ongoing blockade in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping route for oil and gas, has intensified global fuel price pressures. As a result, oil marketing companies like Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum, and Hindustan Petroleum are facing average monthly losses of ₹30,000 crore. To alleviate this financial strain, the government has reduced excise duties, costing approximately ₹14,000 crore monthly. Despite these challenges, officials assure that there is no shortage of LPG supply in the market. The rising costs of LPG and other essentials have contributed to an increase in household cooking expenses, with the price of home-cooked thalis rising by 2% year-on-year in April 2026.
