The Indian government announced that urea production for March-April 2023 reached 3.74 million tonnes, closely matching last year's output despite challenges from the West Asia crisis. To ensure sufficient supply for the kharif season, authorities have secured 3.7 million tonnes of imported urea. Overall domestic fertiliser production, which includes di-ammonium phosphate (DAP) and other types, totaled 6.23 million tonnes during the same period, with imports at 1.53 million tonnes. Aparna S Sharma, speaking at an inter-ministerial briefing, emphasized that the current fertiliser availability is robust, with 19.33 million tonnes of stocks ready for the kharif 2026 season, which is approximately 50% of the total requirement of 39.04 million tonnes. The government has also floated a global tender for 1.9 million tonnes of phosphatic fertilisers, indicating a proactive approach to managing fertiliser supplies. Notably, there has been no change in the maximum retail price of fertilisers, reflecting effective logistics and planning.
