Today marks the counting of votes for bypolls in seven assembly seats across five Indian states. These bypolls were necessitated by the deaths of sitting MLAs, including Ajit Pawar, the former deputy chief minister of Maharashtra, who tragically died in a plane crash in January. The constituencies involved include Umreth in Gujarat, Bagalkot and Davanagere South in Karnataka, Rahuri and Baramati in Maharashtra, Koridang in Nagaland, and Dharmanagar in Tripura. In Maharashtra's Baramati, Sunetra Pawar, the NCP chief and widow of Ajit Pawar, is contesting against 22 independent candidates. The Rahuri seat has been vacant since the death of BJP MLA Shivaji Kardile, with his son contesting the seat. In Karnataka, the bypolls are a significant contest between the ruling Congress and the BJP, with both parties fielding notable candidates. The Umreth bypoll in Gujarat sees a contest primarily between BJP's Harshad Parmar and Congress's Bhrugurajsinh Chauhan. In Nagaland, Daochier I Imchen represents the BJP in the Koridang seat, while Dharmanagar in Tripura features a triangular contest among the BJP, Congress, and CPI(M)-led Left Front.
