On June 5, Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri launched E85 fuel, a high-ethanol blend comprising 80-85% ethanol and 14-19% petrol, specifically for flex-fuel vehicles (FFVs). The initiative follows the introduction of India's first passenger FFV. E85 is priced nearly ₹20 lower per litre than conventional petrol, promoting the use of domestically produced ethanol and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 61% compared to petrol vehicles. E85 fuel is exclusively for FFVs, and the government plans to create a nationwide flex-fuel ecosystem. The rollout will begin at 48 retail outlets, expanding to 500 by December 2026 and 5,000 by December 2027, aiming to raise ethanol blending levels to nearly 26% by 2030-31. Puri noted that since E20 became standard in India, there have been no reported engine failures related to ethanol blending, highlighting the viability of higher ethanol blends as demonstrated in Brazil.
