In Punta Marina, a coastal village in Italy, residents are grappling with an overwhelming influx of peacocks, which have increased in number to around 120. The loud mating calls of these birds can reach 115 decibels, equivalent to the noise of a chainsaw, causing sleep disturbances and obstructing daily life. Retired bus driver Marco Manzoli, 81, expressed frustration over the situation, noting the mess left by the peacocks, which he described as droppings resembling ice cream. The peacocks, previously residing in nearby woods, have moved into the village to escape predators such as wolves and foxes. This has led to community division; while some residents are annoyed by the noise and mess, others, like baker Claudio Ianiero, see the peacocks as a magical part of the village. A relocation attempt in 2022 failed due to opposition from animal welfare groups, but local officials are contemplating another effort to manage the peacock population.
