The Delhi Gymkhana Club (DGC) is contesting a directive from the Indian government that mandates the club to vacate its 27.3-acre site in Lutyens' Delhi by June 5. This legal dispute escalated when club member Vijay Khurana and the staff welfare association filed suits in the Delhi High Court, which will be heard by Justice Avneesh Jhingan. The Centre's eviction order, issued on May 22, cites the need for the property for public security and defense infrastructure, invoking a public purpose clause from the original lease. The club argues that the eviction violates its perpetual leasehold rights and the constitutional protection of property rights under Article 300A. The lawsuit claims that the eviction notice lacks provisions for compensation and that the government previously acknowledged the club's ownership rights in a 2009 letter. Nearly 500 members support the club's plea to maintain the status quo regarding the property, emphasizing the need to dispel misconceptions about the club's exclusivity.
