Eli Lilly, a major pharmaceutical company, has backed the Haryana Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) recent seizure of counterfeit versions of its diabetes medication, Mounjaro, in Gurugram, Haryana, India. The company confirmed that the fake products did not originate from its authorized supply chain. This action follows a crackdown on an illegal racket selling counterfeit Mounjaro KwikPens in various dosages. Winselow Tucker, president and general manager for Eli Lilly India, stated that counterfeit products pose significant risks to patient safety and public health, as they are not manufactured under approved quality controls. Mounjaro, which is used for managing type 2 diabetes and chronic weight management, was the highest-selling drug in India for the financial year 2025-26, with sales reaching ₹923 crore (approximately $111 million USD). Eli Lilly advised patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals to be vigilant against counterfeit medicines, which may have tampered packaging or inconsistencies in labeling. The company urged consumers to purchase medications only through authorized channels with valid prescriptions.
