On Monday morning, police in North 24 Parganas district, West Bengal, arrested four workers from the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) party following violent clashes with supporters of the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) outside the Jagaddal Police Station. The arrested individuals were identified as Koushik Das, Sikander Prasad, Gopal Routh, and Shyamdev Shaw. Reports indicate that one of the suspects was found hiding under a cot during the police raid, while others fled amid the chaos. The violence erupted on Sunday night, just hours before Prime Minister Narendra Modi was scheduled to hold a public meeting in nearby Barrackpore, intensifying the political tensions in the region. The clashes were reportedly sparked by the tearing of flags and posters related to Modi's visit, leading to a mob of approximately 200 people gathering outside the police station. The Election Commission condemned the situation, highlighting that the mob unlawfully entered the police premises and attacked law enforcement personnel, resulting in injuries to a Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) constable. In a separate incident, crude bombs were hurled at the residence of BJP MLA Pawan Singh, injuring three individuals. The police have initiated investigations into both the bombing and the clashes, while the National Investigation Agency is probing the recovery of 79 crude bombs from a suspected TMC worker's residence. The ongoing violence reflects the heightened tensions as West Bengal approaches the conclusion of its two-phase Assembly elections, with results expected on May 4.
