On Friday, fuel prices were raised across India, with petrol rates increasing by up to ₹3 per litre. In New Delhi, petrol now costs ₹97.77 per litre, while diesel prices have risen to ₹90.67 per litre. Among major cities, Kolkata saw the largest increase, with petrol prices climbing ₹3.29 to ₹108.74 per litre. Diesel prices in Kolkata also rose by ₹3.11, reaching ₹95.13 per litre. This hike follows a significant rise in wholesale fuel inflation, with petrol inflation soaring to 32.4% from 2.50% in the previous month. The increase is attributed to escalating global crude oil prices and supply disruptions linked to geopolitical tensions. State-run oil marketing companies are reportedly facing financial strain, losing nearly ₹10 billion daily due to retail prices lagging behind rising import costs. The situation underscores India's vulnerability as the world's third-largest oil consumer, particularly amid ongoing conflicts affecting energy supplies.
