On Monday, the Supreme Court of India granted Lok Sabha MP Rajesh Ranjan, also known as Pappu Yadav, the liberty to approach the Patna High Court regarding his pending petition for upgrading his security cover from 'Y' to 'Z' category. Yadav, representing the Purnia constituency in Bihar, cited threats from the gang of gangster Lawrance Bishnoi as the reason for his request. His counsel informed a bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant that the Patna High Court had issued a notice on November 19, 2024, regarding the plea but had not scheduled a hearing or uploaded the order. The Supreme Court bench questioned the necessity of 'Z' category security, to which Yadav's counsel explained that the MP lacks private guards and has only received 'Y plus' security on paper. The Supreme Court expressed confidence that the Patna High Court would consider Yadav's request to expedite the hearing of his petition. The security classification under the central protection list ranges from 'Z-plus' to 'X', with 'Z' category receiving 22 personnel compared to 11 for 'Y' category.
