Japan is currently open to dialogue with Russia, as stated by Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi, who highlighted the importance of communication during challenging times. However, he confirmed that there are no immediate plans for political contacts between the two nations. Motegi's remarks come in light of Japan's strained relations with Russia, exacerbated by sanctions imposed since 2022. Following visits by Japanese officials to Moscow, including representatives from the Japan Business Federation (Keidanren), Motegi clarified that the purpose of these trips was to safeguard Japanese business interests in Russia, not to forge new partnerships. Additionally, Japan's recent allocation of $14.6 million to Ukraine under NATO's PUTL program was described by Motegi as unrelated to its diplomatic stance towards Russia. The Russian Ambassador to Tokyo, Nikolay Nozdrev, criticized Japan's current policies as hostile, stating that relations have reached an unprecedented low and that improvement hinges on Japan's willingness to change its approach.
